Imagine receiving a full paycheck, all your last pay period wages. No income tax except possibly state. Think FairTax. It is the proposed replacement plan to the dreaded IRS and the complicated tax code system which the majority of citizens do not understand, including the experts. How will the government collect revenues then? It’s simple. Citizens would pay federal government taxes on what they buy in new purchases and services. The proposed 23 percent tax on every dollar would be included in all displayed prices. No added tax at the register.

FairTax - Citizens' Vigilance Required
Imagine receiving a full paycheck, all your last pay period wages. No income tax except possibly state. Think FairTax. It is the proposed replacement plan to the dreaded IRS and the complicated tax code system which the majority of citizens do not understand, including the experts.

How will the government collect revenues then? It’s simple. Citizens would pay federal government taxes on what they buy in new purchases and services. The proposed 23 percent tax on every dollar would be included in all displayed prices. No added tax at the register.

Exploring the Frequently Asked Questions on http://www.FairTax.org, many doubts about this plan may be answered. Citizens may want to educate themselves through reading “The FairTax Book” by Neal Boortz (syndicated talk show host) and Georgia’s Congressman John Linder.

Congressman Linder keeps the FairTax bill (HR25) perking through the House, gaining more cosponsors each year. Many politicians claim to know what the proposal entails, but their ignorance is revealed by their responses when anyone asks about the FairTax. Witness recent responses by presidential candidates to FairTax questions.

Am I for the FairTax Plan? Yes---with a couple of major reservations. Our Congress. Considering the internal machinery driving our bogged-down Congress, especially their do-nothing actions on any major issue regarding Social Security, Medicare, and Tax reforms, who wouldn’t have reservations?

Observing what Congress actually accomplishes---spending and driving up the National Debt more every year---citizens seriously doubt anything will change except to increase taxes withheld from wages.

These reservations are valid ones when we look at how Congress passes and enacts legislation. It appears that the only time legislation moves fast is when the enactment would be of benefit to those politicians holding the seats of power---and don’t forget the influence of lobbyists.

Another reservation we should have is the fact that even if the IRS became a footnote in recorded history, a new bureaucracy would arise in its place. It might be called the Federal Rebate Center (FRC). This government entity would collect all citizens’ information pertaining to annual incomes and provide monthly rebate checks for basic expenses. Well, at least all those IRS civil servants won’t lose a job, just change their job description.

Maybe the idea of receiving a federal government monthly rebate check is too reminiscent of the welfare type of mindset. Wouldn’t people see this as dependence on Big Bro? The rebate amount is determined by basic poverty level requirements.

Another reservation: The 16th Amendment (HJR16) must be repealed and ratified by at least 38 states. This could take years, but the FairTax could be instituted any time. After all, withholding taxes were not a fact of life until the 20th century. Congress is not known for speed and efficiency in legislation enactment.

If the FairTax bill should gain momentum through the House, there is one item to ensure our representatives do not do---keep withholding income taxes from wages while enacting the FairTax. Why? Congress would love that and become slow turtles with plenty of excuses to eliminating income taxes while collecting that 23 percent FairTax at the cash registers.

Also, citizens should attempt to dissuade government entities from “adding” any amendments, changes or exceptions which only “complicates” any legislation enactment. Note the 60,000 page tax code as it is now. How’d it get that way?

There is a growing swell of citizens’ grassroots support for the FairTax spreading from Georgia and reaching into many states. But until the majority of citizens are educated about the FairTax and step aboard the FairTax train, nothing much will change inside the beltway. When citizens know what the FairTax entails and how it will directly affect their paychecks, then and only then will they start educating their elected officials and pushing the FairTax.

Despite all the other major problems facing our nation, this is one subject important enough to educate ourselves about. If nothing else, do it for our children and future generations.

If you decide you’re for it, make sure you contact your elected representatives and, not only tell them you are for the FairTax (HR 25), also prod them into reading “The FairTax Book.”

One last concern: Even if the FairTax system replaces the withholding taxes from income system, our Congress would still retain the power to increase the FairTax from the touted 23 percent tax on new goods and services. This will require citizens to be ever alert to the maneuverings of their elected officials.

That’s a good thing. Ever Vigilant---which we have not always been.
