- 7-2-2007
- Categorized in: Sleep
A quick afternoon nap recharges the batteries for a more productive afternoon. In fact, a powernap may be essential when you don’t get enough sleep at night.
“The majority of Americans are sleep deprived,” says Bill Anthony, Ph.D., author of “The Art of Napping.” “They aren’t getting enough nighttime sleep.
“Since most people can’t rearrange their lives to get more sleep — with two jobs, child care, elder care, long commutes, whatever it happens to be — we recommend they learn how to nap.”

Follow these napping strategies for energizing afternoon naps:
- Know when you need a nap. Everyone has their own signals that they’re slowing down, such as a shortened temper or memory lapses, or not working at peak performance.
- Control Your Surroundings. Make yourself as comfortable as possible, lying flat if possible, shutting doors, darkening windows and even using a mask.
- Get Comfy. Surround yourself with items that make you feel relaxed and comfortable such as a soft blanket or a favorite CD.
- Find Your Magic Number. A ten minute nap may be perfect, but twenty minutes may leave you feeling groggy and disoriented. Find what works for you, but don’t go beyond 30 minutes or you’ll risk lying awake at night.
- Set an Alarm. To make sure you wake up on time, set a clock, watch, or have a colleague give you a nudge.
- Make Napping a Routine. You should make napping a part of your daily routine, even on weekends. Otherwise, you will end up messing up your internal clock and have difficulty sleeping at night.
- Enjoy. Don’t feel guilty. Your nap will make you more alert and productive, so ditch the guilt and enjoy your snooze. Is your boss unhappy with the idea of your taking a short snooze? Tell him that even NASA knows the benefits of a short nap. NASA allows pilots to take naps in order to increase performance and alertness.
