Ginger for Stomach Problems

When I was in my late teens and early twenties, I used to try and do everything at breakneck speed and developed a very tender stomach in the process. I ate fast, I talked fast, I worked fast, I walked fast, I did everything fast (well, almost everything) and I had a lot of gastritis because of it. I used to drink Maalox antacid like it was water until I learned to slow down and do things more calmly and with a measured rhythm. Often, I would have a stomach flare up in the Spring and Fall (as did my father) and it would take weeks for my stomach to calm down again, even while taking the Maalox. I eventually learned to adjust the diet and end the gastritis problem, but ten years ago, I learned about the wonderful calming effect that ginger has on the stomach. I wish I knew about ginger when I was younger, I could have saved myself a lot of pain and money. However, you don’t have to wait until middle age to figure out how beneficial ginger is for stomach problems. Today, fresh ginger root is not only found in Asian markets, but in most American supermarkets as well. It’s one of the best things you can take for ANY sort of stomach upset: indigestion, sore stomach, sour stomach, nauseous stomach, etc.; you name it and ginger will likely help fix it.

You simply have to try it to be convinced of its effectiveness. It’s easy to prepare. Peel the outer covering off the ginger root and slice it into thin wafers using a sharp knife. Drop the slices into a jar filled with 90% distilled water and 10% vinegar. It’ll keep forever in the frig and for many months even without refrigeration. Whenever you have any stomach upset, chew a few slices and swallow. It’s slightly hot to the taste buds, but the feeling quickly passes. Within minutes, your stomach is going to start feeling dramatically better and after 20 minutes, you won’t even remember that you had a stomach problem! It works that well. To keep a jumpy stomach under control, make a large pot of ginger root tea (drop 6 big slices into the boiling water and simmer for an hour) and put it into the frig in a quart jar and drink a little throughout the day. Works like Gang Busters. I often eat ginger with meals to aid in digestion. Stop throwing away your money on all those over the counter stomach remedies. Use ginger and solve the problem naturally. Indian people, particularly, know well the healing ability of ginger. Westerners should learn what they’ve known for centuries.

Another tip: If ginger is unavailable, consider taking a digestive enzyme such as Pancreatin instead of using an antacid to relieve a sour stomach. Seems to work whether you’re stomach is empty, full, or in between. For me, ginger is still the best though. Carry a small bottle of ginger with you and you’ll have it whenever you need it.
