Sleepy Drivers’ Eye-Steering Coordination Affected
- 7-2-2007
- Categorized in: Sleep
A lack of sleep affects the eye-steering coordination that’s needed when you’re steering your vehicle.
BioNews reported a study from Manchester Metropolitan University’s Mark Chattingon that asked volunteers to drive a winding route on a simulator. Both their eye movements and steering wheel movements were precisely tracked. They drove for one hour starting at 5:00 a.m. on the first day. They were kept awake the following night and drove again at 5:00 a.m. on the second day for up to two-and-a-half hours.
Chattington discovered that even one night of sleep deprivation can drastically affect a driver’s ability to coordinate eye movements with steering.
“The analysis of eye-steering coordination may provide a useful method of detecting when a driver is in danger of losing control of a vehicle due to fatigue, before the driver actually falls asleep,” he said.
To maintain optimum driving ability, experts recommend between seven and eight hours of sleep each night.
