Pesticides

For several years I have been curious and concerned about reports from many parts of the world that bee colonies were vanishing or dying. Because of their ability to pollinate fruit and vegetables bees are of enormous importance to mankind. . Finally a breakthrough in understanding this problem has appeared on the scene. Whether this solves the whole bee problem or is simply one part of a more complex issue remains to be seen.

A recently released consumer brochure from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regarding the use of pesticides on food, and suggestions on how to reduce exposure to pesticides has received sharp criticism from a consumers group. The brochure was designed to inform the public about the risks and benefits of pesticide use.

According to a study, residents in the United States were found to carry harmful levels of pesticides in their bodies, with children, women and Mexican Americans disproportionately exposed to the chemicals. Pesticides have been associated with serious health conditions such as infertility, birth defects and cancer.

Did you know 888 million pounds of pesticides and herbicides are used each year in the United States alone? That means three pounds of pesticides and herbicides are applied each year for every man, woman and child in this country. Once applied, these chemicals drift into the air and are inhaled by passersby. They are also carried by winds to destinations miles away from the application site. And they are washed into streams, lakes, rivers and underground aquifers that supply our water.

Pesticide residues on some fruits and vegetables can exceed safe limits for children. The foods found to have the highest levels of pesticide residues were domestic and imported peaches, grapes, apples, pears and spinach; U.S.-grown green beans; and U.S.-grown winter squash, both fresh and frozen.

    Pesticides and Aggression

For the past 25 years, tens of millions of Americans in hundreds of cities and towns have been drinking tap water that is contaminated with low levels of insecticides, weed killers, and artificial fertilizer. They not only drink it, they also bathe and shower in it, thus inhaling small quantities of farm chemicals and absorbing them through the skin and through breathing in the vapors. Naturally, the problem is at its worst in agricultural areas of the country.

It seems like the EPA will be the last one to admit that pesticides pose a health risk. However, I assure you that they do pose a risk and should be avoided as much as practically possible.

One consumer group recently set up its own Web site that allows parents to fill a grocery cart with typical items that a preschooler might eat during a day and then calculate the likely amount of pesticide residue consumed. The address is www.foodnews.org.

We are really doing horrible things to our environment and our health with these poisons. I would encourage everyone to eat organic food whenever possible and also try to get involved in the ongoing struggle to reduce pesticide use, not just in this country, but worldwide.
