Fossil Fuels Sometimes Greener Than Biofuels
- Article
- May 12, 2011

Researchers at MIT say the industry may want to make sure it has examined biofuels’ complete carbon footprint before making an all-out push. They say that when a biofuel’s origins are factored in — for example, taking into account whether the fuel is made from palm oil grown in a clear-cut rainforest — conventional fossil fuels may sometimes be the “greener” choice.
The World of Free Energy

In the late 1880s, trade journals in the electrical sciences were predicting “free electricity” in the near future. Incredible discoveries about the nature of electricity were becoming common place. Nikola Tesla was demonstrating “wireless lighting” and other wonders associated with high frequency currents. There was an excitement about the future like never before. Within 20 years, there would be automobiles, airplanes, movies, recorded music, telephones, radio, and practical cameras. Was
all of this excitement about “free electricity”, which happened just
before the beginning of the last century, all just wishful thinking
that “real science” eventually disproved?

T. Boone Pickens has been advertising widely about his wind energy plan. In radio advertisements, he touts wind power to solve America’s energy deficit, with natural gas -- then freed from electricity generation by wind power -- used to fuel American automobiles. Mr. Pickens says that there are vast areas of Texas available for wind power generation and that he can solve America’s energy problem in this way........

A funny thing happened on the way to Pelosi's House the other day. A handful of Democrats and Republican House members took a detour and found themselves in a committee chamber where they formed the 'House Energy Working Group.' This small, bipartisan group of congressmen, led by John Peterson (R-PA) and Neil Abercrombie (D-Hawaii), have chosen to do an end run around Ms. Pelosi and her anti-energy policy legislation known as the 'Drill Bill,' which would demand that oil companies drill on land already leased, and prohibit any expansion offshore or in Alaska. In other words, force drilling where there is little or no oil, and ban drilling where the oil is.
Harry Reid Blocking Legislation to Lower Gas Prices

Amid soaring gas prices, President Bush rightly announced on Monday that he would lift a long-standing executive order banning offshore oil drilling in an effort to increase domestic production. And, he essentially dared Congress to do the same! But Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid responded by telling President Bush, and the American people for that matter, to DROP DEAD!

Let the Energy Buffalo Run Free

Instead of wisely utilizing our abundant energy, America has been strangled by various federal government bureaucracies, untold reams of burdensome government regulations and counterproductive policies, corrupt environmental special interest groups, and professional politicians who will bend whichever way the prevailing political winds blow. These are the reasons America hasn't built a new oil refinery or new nuclear reactor in thirty or so years. Instead, as billionaire oilman T. Boone Pickens accurately stated the other day, we are transferring hundreds of billions of our national treasury to other nations. Even to our enemies. Truly bizarre.
Afloat on an Ocean of Oil

For sheer insanity consider a nation that has an estimated 31 billion barrels of oil offshore of its coasts and 117 billion barrels of oil under land owned or managed by the government, plus 139 billion barrels beneath privately held land. In just one area, a desolate place designated a wildlife refuge, there’s an estimated 7.7 billion barrels untapped. The nation with this abundance of oil is, of course, the United States of America. Most of the areas where oil is known to exist have been ruled off-limits to any exploration or extraction by the government.

According to the federal Minerals Management Service, about 86 billion barrels of oil and 420 trillion cubic feet of natural gas are locked up and untouchable just off our shores. "Locked up"? By whom? Who could be so stupid? So diabolical? So un-American?

The Democrats'
climate-change bill collapsed last week under the weight of brutal cost
realities. It was a wake-up call. This is the year Americans joined the
real world of energy costs. Now someone needs to explain to them why we
– and we alone – are sitting on an ocean of energy but won't drill for
it.
House Subcommittee Rejects Plan to Open U.S. Waters to More Oil Exploration

With record oil prices and gas prices projected to hover around the $4 mark for the rest of the summer, Republicans have ratcheted up their efforts to open up oil exploration along U.S. coastline. But the long-sought change has so far been unsuccessful. Most offshore oil production and exploration has been banned since a federal law passed in 1981.

A leader in Congress sees a need for "obviously more production" from America's abundant energy reserves. Is Rahm Emanuel, head of the House Democratic Caucus, joining the "drill here, drill now" bandwagon? While attacking GOP presidential nominee John McCain for "trying to drill our way out of the situation," Emanuel told CNBC: "I think you have to have both — obviously more production — but also to start to invest, which has not happened, in (energy) alternatives as well."
Making Alternative Energies Mainstream

It's all about what you believe you see. It's all about perception. Making cleaner, more efficient energy sources and technologies more mainstream and popular in America is about perception, as well. Our reality in regards to energy use and our "system of things" is largely based not on the reality, but more on what we've been told or sold to believe as the only real, acceptable and practical way to meet our needs. Making alternative energies mainstream is a task for the dreamer, the visionary, the American who's not afraid of a little hard work. It's going to take a grassroots, dig-in, get your hands dirty effort on every level from personal, to local, to state on up to the federal level. And all of that starts with one person: You.
